IQNA – A Quran recitation expert has shared his insights on the key elements that make a Quran recitation impactful for the audience.

Abbas Anjam

In an interview with IQNA, Abbas Anjam said that impactful Quran recitations are not necessarily the ones that are more "technical".

"The essence of the message depends on three core elements: the qari (the sender), the audience (the receiver), and the Quran (the message itself). The qari must be moved by the message before he can move others. He must also understand what he is reciting," he said.

He added that the Quran, as the message, has no flaws or gaps in its structure, and it is the foundation of the effectiveness of recitation.

"As for the audience, the question is: How can the qari ensure that they are truly influenced by the message?" he asked.

He said that qaris are often advised to offer more technical recitations, but the audience may not need or appreciate such details.

He noted that some qaris who are not very proficient in technical aspects can still have a lasting impact on the audience, adding that prominent qaris like Abdul Basit, Manshawi, or Mustafa Ismail managed to captivate their audience through their unique approaches to recitation despite not offering the most technical performances.

He also said that a key factor in effective recitation is the ability to evoke the emotions of the audience.

"Qaris should be able to establish an emotional connection with the audience, beyond the technical aspects of recitation," he said.

He stressed the importance of studying the methods and theories of the impact of recitation, and said that while sharing experiences and lessons from Quran classes is valuable, it is also essential to engage in scientific research for a comprehensive understanding of the impact.

He also highlighted the need to adapt the recitation style to different settings and audiences, taking into account factors such as time, place, age, and specific conditions.
