The roots of this tradition stretch back to the early Safavid period, with the oldest documented endowment credited to Mr. Atiq, also known as Khawaja Atiq. This devoted individual bestowed 22 properties upon the holy shrine, marking the initiation of a practice that has endured for half a millennium.

The earliest existing endowment document within the Imam Reza shrine is a historical note inscribed on the back cover of a hand-written Quran. This significant relic is currently safeguarded by the Organization of Libraries, Museums, and the Document Center of the holy shrine. Additionally, the oldest endowment manuscripts include Quranic pamphlets dating back to the 4th century AH.

Among the invaluable documents that shed light on the administrative organization and endowments of the Imam Reza shrine is the Alishahi scroll. Crafted with the assistance of Ali Qolikhan, the governor of Khorasan, this document serves as a comprehensive list of identified endowments within the complex and the Goharshad Mosque.

It meticulously records endowments from the inception of the shrine until the issuance of the document. Beyond being a mere inventory, this scroll functions as the official work order and budget of the holy shrine. It registers endowments, detailing specifications, addresses, income, expenses, and consumptions – a pivotal historical record.
