WASHINGTON, DC (IQNA) – A Muslim group in the US has denounced the act of desecrating the Quran outside the Turkish House in New York City, where the Turkish consulate general and UN mission are located.

The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, issued a statement on Saturday, expressing its condemnation of the incident that occurred on Friday.

"We condemn this apparent attempt to desecrate the Quran – a sacred text followed by millions of Americans – and ask religious and political leaders of all faiths and backgrounds to stand with the American Muslim community in repudiation of the growing bigotry and division we are witnessing nationwide," said Afaf Nasher, the executive director of CAIR's New York chapter.

The statement came after a video circulated on social media, showing a suspect throwing a copy of the Quran on the ground and kicking it outside the Turkish House. The suspect was removed from the premises by the Turkish House security personnel.

The incident was reminiscent of recent acts of Quran desecration in Sweden and Denmark, which were carried out under the pretext of free speech and sparked angry protests in Muslim countries, including attacks on diplomatic missions.
