TEHRAN (IQNA) – The people of Karbala and other Iraqi cities will do their best during the Arbaeen season to serve the pilgrims coming from different countries to Iraq for the Arbaeen marches, a Karbala University instructor said.

Speaking at the third international conference on Arbaeen, held at the Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran on Monday, Sayyed Zia al-Safi also highlighted the important role of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi) and their efforts to ensure security for the Arbaeen pilgrims and help in organizing the marches.

He further referred to enemy attempts to downplay the importance of Arbaeen and said measures should be taken to counter them by promoting the event via Islamic media.

Also, al-Safi said, university scholars and academics can play a major role in these efforts by elaborating on the message of Ashura and the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS).

The one-day conference was organized by the Allameh Tabataba'i University with the participation of scholars and thinkers from different countries.

Arbaeen, which is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias flock to Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen falls on October 19 this year.
