TEHRAN (IQNA) – Islamic unity is always the strategic slogan of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a cleric said.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Reza Taqavi, head of the founding board of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought (WFPIST), congratulated world Muslims on the Islamic Unity Week and said unity of followers of Islam is something that the Quran has underlined.

He added that one of the pivots of unity in the Muslim world is the issue of Quds (Jerusalem) and Palestine.

The cleric also referred to the upcoming Islamic Unity Conference and said Iran annually organizes the event to promote unity and solidarity among Muslims.

The 32nd International Islamic Unity Conference will be held in Tehran later this week with the participation of 350 scholars, thinkers and political and media activists from 100 countries.

The WFPIST annually holds the international conference during the Muslim Unity week with the aim of discussing ways to enhance unity among Muslims worldwide.

The 17th day of the month of Rabi al-Awwal in the lunar Hijri calendar is believed by Shia Muslims to mark the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), while Sunni Muslims regard the 12th day of the month as the birthday of the last prophet.

The interval between the two dates is celebrated every year as the Islamic Unity Week.

Late founder of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khomeini (RA) declared the occasion as the Islamic Unity Week back in the 1980s.
