TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian official described the current conditions of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar as evidence of the West’s double standards when it comes to protecting human rights.

Speaking to IQNA, Gholam Reza Mesbahi Moqaddam, a member of Iran’s Expediency Council, said Western human rights institutions and governments have failed to play a constructive role in ending the massacre of Rohingya Muslims because they believe the people of the West are more important than those in the East, including Muslims.

He further underlined the need for Muslim countries and nations as well as Islamic institutions like the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to make efforts to help the persecuted Muslim minority and end the anti-Muslim violence in Myanmar.

Hundreds of Rohingya Muslims have been killed in the violence in Rakhine state of Myanmar in recent weeks.

The UN has described Myanmar military’s crackdown on Muslims in Rakhine as a textbook case of ethnic cleansing, with displaced Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh describing whole villages being razed, gang rapes and massacres.

The Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar have long faced severe discrimination and were the targets of violence in 2012 that killed hundreds and drove about 140,000 people from their homes to camps for the internally displaced.
