Officials in charge of implementing the Najaf, Cultural Capital of Islamic World Plan should follow the Seerah of Imam Ali (AS) by siding with the oppressed nations and supporting the Islamic Awakening.
Hojat-ol-Islam Abu Jahad Al-Shaybi, Iraqi Islamic scholar, made the remark in a specialized forum featuring the Najaf, 2012 Cultural Capital of the Islamic World Plan.
The forum was held at IQNA’s central office on Tuesday, November 22.
He urged the plan’s officials to use all their means to support the Islamic awakening movement, adding that it would be in line with Imam Ali’s (AS) Seerah who always supported the oppressed.
He said the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) selected Najaf as the cultural capital of the Islamic world in a 2008 meeting of its member states’ culture ministers in Baku, the capital of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
He added that the nation and government of Iraq welcomed the selection and intend to implement the programs of the plan in the best way possible to show the importance of the holy city of Najaf to the world.
The active member of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq said one of the main reason for selecting Najaf was that it is home to the mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS)., adding that Imam Ali (AS) was a character who manifested true Muhammadan Islam in all its political, cultural, social and Jihadi aspects.
He stressed that Najaf owes its religious status to the holy mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS).
He noted that the Islamic seminary of Najaf, which has also contributed to the special religious and scientific status of the city, was also a major factor taken into consideration for selection of the city. “The seminary, which was established by Sheikh Tusi some one thousand years ago has played a major role in developing the Islamic culture and civilization.”
Hojat-ol-Islam Al-Shaybi gave a report about Iraq’s programs to celebrate the selection of Najaf as Islamic world’s cultural capital, saying that the Iraqi cabinet has allocated a budget of 537 billion Iraqi dinars for renovation and reconstruction of religious places and organizing cultural programs in Najaf.
“The Najaf Provincial Governor Council has set up a special committee headed by the country’s culture minister to implement the programs,” he stated, noting that the council has also approved funds for building hotels and making preparations for welcoming the guests who come to the city to attend the different cultural and scientific programs.
He stressed that implementing the programs of the Najaf plan requires cooperation of all groups and individuals, noting that the city’s social, educational and cultural centers as well as schools, universities and civil society institutes are preparing for contribution.
