Rouhani Meets Ayatollah Sistani in Najaf

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met with grand Ayatollah al-Sistani, Iraq’s top Shia cleric, on Wednesday.

Rouhani, who is in Iraq on an official trip, arrived in the holy city of Najaf on Wednesday.

After visiting the holy mausoleum of Imam Ali (AS), the Iranian president went to the office of Ayatollah Sistani in the old part of the city.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Ambassador to Iraq Iraj Masjedi accompanied Rouhani in the meeting.

There have been heightened security measures in place in Najaf for the president’s visit.
